About the course or programme

The project work for this course takes place in the beautiful Upper Derwent Valley of the Derbyshire Peak District. A wide variety of skills are taught and practised including dry stone walling, post and wire fencing, post and rail fencing, gate and stile construction, tree planting, tree felling and pruning, footpath construction, habitat surveying and hedgelaying depending on the season. The course gives excellent experience of working alongside countryside professionals including the Peak National Park Ranger Service, Severn Trent Forestry Service and the National Trust.

The course is of a very practical nature with evidence being gathered for the compilation of a portfolio of evidence towards the qualification.

Existing skills, qualifications or experience required
The course requires reasonable levels of fitness. Previous experience of conservation activity would be advantageous, as would the ability to compile a portfolio of evidence under the guidance of a skilled Trainer / Assessor.

How you achieve the qualification
You will have an assessor who will observe your practical skills while you work, and help you build up a portfolio of evidence towards the qualification.

Attendance requirements
38 weeks, 2 days a week (Mon/Tues)

COSTS
Course fees due are inclusive of vat at 17.5% unless stated otherwise at the bottom of this section.
Course is free to the following learners Those in receipt of the following benefits:
Asylum Seeker in receipt of assistance under the terms of the Immigration and Asylum Act 1999;
Learners who are 16-18 on 31.08.08;
Learners in receipt of Jobseekers Allowance;
Learners in receipt of Income Support;
Learners in receipt of Working Tax Credit;
Learners in receipt of Pensions Guarantee Tax Credit;
A unwaged dependant receiving any of the above;
Learners in receipt of Housing / Council Tax Benefit.
Learners for whom this qualification will be their first NVQ level two or three.
Others please ask.
Transport provided from Sheffield to project sites and return. Travel expenses refunded in full to those in receipt of means-tested benefits. Help available for childcare costs if on benefits.
NUS card available.
Protective footwear and trousers provided.
The course is funded by the Learning and Skills Council (LSC) via Castle College, Nottingham.
