England - Rhododendron Revenge

Towards sustainability     NB08110     Fri 7 Nov 2008  to  Fri 14 Nov 2008
BIODIVERSITY
Steeple Woodland is in an old mining area set above St Ives with wonderful views over the town & Carbis Bay as well as the surrounding West Penwith coastline and countryside.  The week forms part of a large community project aiming to restore the area back to heathland by clearing and burning invasive rhododendron to benefit a variety of rare species. Experience Cornwall 's dramatic cliffs, wooded valleys, streams, disused engine houses, winding paths, an abundance and variety of flora, birds and wildlife, tucked away little cottages, hidden tracks and the ever present changing tides and swells of the sea.

You will be staying at Atlantic Lodge a Victorian/Edwardian House which overlooks the fabulous white sand beach at Sennen with views of Longships Lighthouse and the Scilly Isles. It is a safe 5 minutes walk, down through the sand dune valley, to both the beach and the coastal footpath. Atlantic Lodge has spacious accommodation, views and extensive gardens .

You'll be guided by experienced group leaders who know the local area well and have a good knowledge of the practical work.

Our fruit and veg, meat and dairy products will be sourced from local organic producers and all our tea and coffee and as much else as we can manage will be fairly traded.

For your day off Atlantic Lodge is ideally situated for enjoying the beach, going for a winter surf, for walking the coast or to explore western Cornwall. Penzance, the Tate at St. Ives, the Minack Theatre, St. Michaels Mount, the Scilly Isles and Lands End are all close at hand.
