Hedgelaying is an important element in the sustainable management of hedgerows in most areas of lowland England and Wales, improving stockproof qualities and re-invigorating the hedge by encouraging new growth from ground level. Closely related to the more widespread ‘Midlands’ style, the Cheshire Style of hedgelaying owes it’s origins to the traditional patterns of mixed livestock and arable farming of the area. With a single row of stakes and brushwood to one side only, the Cheshire style allows cattle to be kept on the brushwood or ‘field’ side whilst the ‘clean’ or ‘face’ side is limited to arable cropping for a number of years. This allows for re-growth to occur on this side, uncompromised by shading from brushwood or browsing by livestock. After a few years, the new growth is strong enough to withstand livestock again and cattle can be allowed back in.
Our accommodation for the weekend will be a residential centre which has dormitories with bunks, showers, a well equipped kitchen, and a communal dining and lounge area.
Linked training event: This weekend holiday is linked to an NCFE certificated hedgelaying training event starting on Friday 7 November. This involves an opportunity to gain certification in hedgelaying at Introduction Level, Level 1 or Level 2. If you are interested in attending this course please contact via BTCV’s Northern Training Administrator on 01772 204651 or e-mail: northern-training@btcv.org.uk
