Coppicing involves cutting trees and shrubs to ground level, which promotes vigorous re-growth and provides a sustainable supply of wood for the future. Coppicing also benefits wildlife by letting in light to the woodland floor and allowing ground flora to flourish, as well as providing a varied habitat structure within the woodland which can benefit birds, small mammals and invertebrate communities.
This weekend at Stanney Woods, experienced greenwood craftsman Don Whiting will be on hand to help you put some of those freshly cut hazel poles to good use. As well as hurdles, you could have a go at making hay rakes, besom brooms or just about anything else that your ingenuity and the materials will allow.
Our accommodation for the weekend will be a residential centre which has dormitories with bunks, showers, a well equipped kitchen, and a communal dining and lounge area.
Linked training event: This weekend holiday follows on from an NCFE certificated Introduction to Coppicing training course being run on Friday 26 September.
