England - Return to the Moorland Woodland

Towards sustainability     NB0892     Fri 10 Oct 2008  to  Sun 12 Oct 2008
BIODIVERSITY
The lovely and unusually named village of 'Pickup Bank' is situated in the heart of Lancashire Hill Country, high on the moor overlooking the town of Darwen. This area is known for it's amazing views, hidden valleys, open moorland, picturesque reservoirs, remote woodlands, and over 280 miles of public rights of way.

Approximately 15 years ago a small area of community woodland was planted by the Parish Council and the local community on common land just outside the village. The trees have now grown successfully and are a mixture of broadleaved trees and conifers with areas of heathland throughout the site.

Following a successful BTCV holiday task on this site last year, the local area Rangers have asked us to return to finish off the woodland management work that was carried out. This will include felling non-native conifer trees that have encroached onto areas of heathland that are found on the site, and burning brash left after last years task. These tasks will enhance the nature conservation interest of the site and make it more accessible for visitors to the area.

Your accommodation will be at 'Height Nook' a former 17th century stone built farmhouse situated close to the work site and with spectacular views over Darwen Valley. There are seperate sleeping areas for males and females with bunk beds provided, showers and washing facilities, a fully equipped modern kitchen, a seperate dining area, a common room, a conservatory, and the building is heated throughout with oil fired central heatinig.

The local pub caled 'The Old Rosins Inn' is within walking distance of the accommodation should you fancy sampling the local hospitality after a good days work.
