Location:
Drey's Ditches on the edge of North Luton is a scheduled ancient monument. It is a linear bank and ditch feature dating back to the bronze age. Archaeology has shown it once had a palisade and it crosses the route of the ancient (pre roman) Icknield Way.
Task:
We will be hedgelaying along a popular Public Right of Way that runs all the way along the length of this ancient scheduled monument. Laying a hedge not only looks good but encourages new growth from the base and also creates new habitats for flora and fauna. On the first morning there will be a short talk from Luton Borough Council about the site and its importance to the area.
Accommodation:
Our accommodation for the weekend is at the Leslie Sell Activity Centre in Bromham, just outside Bedford (45 minutes from the work site). The centre has dormitories with rooms that each have a double bunk, heating, wardrobes and a chest of drawers. There are also toilet facilities, a kitchen and a lounge/dining area. Showers are available in a separate block.
Leisure Time:
In the evening you could visit Bedford with its many attractions. Priory Country Park is close by and a walk along the embankment itself is recommended.
