Greenham Common is better known for its colourful past but these days there are few signs of the former air base, with the exception of the odd missile silo here and there. If you look carefully you can even spot the old runway. The site has undergone a massive transformation since the base was closed but is still in its infancy as a heathland. The ranger on site is a mine of information and the common in a rare example of a site where all stages of heathland regeneration are there to see. Few people know it also has some lovely old woods with an almost prehistoric feel. Plus there is a huge variety of wildlife including rare ground nesting birds and a number of adders.
We will be cutting down birch trees in areas where they have taken over the heath, which will allow the heather to regenerate and create valuable wildlife corridors across the site. The before and after shots are worth bringing a camera for and the trees make a huge bonfire, so plenty of jacket pototoes to go round. The ranger will also be on hand to give tour of the site, including a potted history of the fascinating transformation of this site from air base to heathland.
We will be staying in the Croft Field Centre in Hungerford, a pretty town a short drive from the site. The field centre provides basic accommodation, with a main room with well equipped kitchen, two smaller rooms for sleeping, toilets and washing faciities and a shower on site.
This is always a fun weekend so book early to avoid disappointment.
