Snelsmore Common is a large area of heathland close to Newbury and contains an example of a rare valley mire habitat. The heath is managed through a variety of methods including the grazing of exmoor ponies, which has in itself led to the resurgance of species of fungi that are found on only a few sites throughout europe.
We will be spending the weekend clearing invasive birch saplings from the valley mire. Due to the sensitivity of the habitat chemicals cannot be used and the ranger relies on the help of armies of volunteers to help keep the woods at bay.
Of course, all of this is just an excuse for a big bonfire and a few jacket potatoes and parsnips, provided courtesy of Keith the ranger. The weekend will also include a tour of the site when we can see the big difference that our efforts make.
We will be staying in the Croft Field Centre in Hungerford, a pretty town a short drive from the site. The field centre provides basic accommodation, with a main room with well equipped kitchen, two smaller rooms for sleeping, toilets and washing faciities and a shower on site.
This is always a fun weekend so book early to avoid disappointment.
