| SPADES - It is advisable to wear strong footwear, preferably steel-toe protection when using a spade. The Garden Spade is a large general purpose spade for all digging uses. The choice of garden spade is down to personal preference but some people find that the treaded version is easier to use on hard ground, and offers improved comfort and flexibility. The Border Spade is lighter than the garden spade and has a narrower blade particularly suited to work in confined spaces, or for long periods of digging, e.g. tree planting. The Junior Spade has a narrower blade than the border spade and a shorter handle.
