Introduced to Britain from SE Europe in the 16th century, laurel is an evergreen shrub. Often planted for winter game cover. Shade tolerant, grows on most soils except chalk. Long spikes of dull white flowers arise from the leaves in April. Red berries develop, turning black when ripe in autumn.
