- This biennial inhabits riverbanks and canals, as well as some dry pastures. Though this plant only flowers for a short period, the spiky heads remain eye-catching for autumn and winter. It seeds easily and may need controlling. Bees, insects and butterflies are attracted to it, and in autumn so are goldfinches.
