| AXES - It is important that personal expert instruction is obtained before attempting to use an axe. It is advisable to wear steel-toe protection whilst using an axe. There is no recommended weight of axe to use, it is a matter of personal preference. However, you would be advised to use a lighter axe until you are proficient. Light axes are normally used for hedging, coppicing and snedding. Wedge Axes are designed for the fast cutting of softwoods. They have a thick blade with slight shoulders to wedge the wood apart as it cuts, e.g. splitting firewood. Felling Axes are used for cutting across the grain of wood, e.g. hedging work. The Clearing Axe has a replacement blade and is only used when snedding trees. It is safer to use than a billhook. |
